Here's what the Bogeyman REVIEW had to say about Golden West in a recent article in the Edmonton Sun:
GOLDEN WEST GOLF COURSE
If you've been a part of the Edmonton golf Scene for any length of time, you'll have heard statements made during some mid winter above average temperatures that go something like this, "If this weather keeps up any longer, Golden West will be opening soon".
This is not a knock, it's a fact that the golf season in our area starts with the opening of the Golden West Golf Course. This is a course that is blessed by Mother Nature. Although it is a mature setting throughout it's 18 holes it also does not have any major elevation changes that tend to keep the sun from melting the snow in certain areas. The early spring sun can beat down on this layout helping it to these traditional early starts.
Speaking of early starts I was completely impressed with the conditions of all 18 greens in my recent visit. They are putting and reacting like it's mid season. I had heard from many source that courses had come through the winter in good form but this was my first time out and if the excellent conditions at Golden West are any indication , there are going to be a lot of happy golfers around here.
It has been a while since my last visit to Golden West and there are a few things that stood out for me that changed my perspective of this course. Firstly, as the trees have matured it has really changed the way I viewed each hole. What you see in most cases is only the hole in front of you. The maturing process of the trees has really developed a better sense of individuality among the layout.
Secondly, the length of the course for some reason surprised me. The back boxes play from 6018 yds. This is obviously not as long as some but to put this yardage into perspective it is very comparable to the forward tee boxes at Riverside & Cougar Creek and it is actually longer than the back tee boxes at Devon. It is not a cake walk. By the time it was over, every club in my bag was used.
Lastly, in terms of what surprised me were the back to back 8th and 9th holes. These two holes are great golf holes. Especially the 8th for me. It is a 358 yd. dog leg right , finishing slightly uphill. The ideal fairway landing area between roughs off of the drive is only 17 yds. wide. Great Hole!
On my recent visit the pace was great and the conditions were very good for this early. We had a real good day at Golden West located between 156 St. and 170 St. on 137 Avenue.
